Una Vuelta Al Sol revolves around embodying that feeling of life trying to flourish in every corner of the planet, moss on rocks, coral reefs, deep-sea creatures, and even cloud gardens above the sky. An attempt to stay in tune with the heartbeat of your environment while being true to yourself. It's about having the certainty that no matter how long we seem to be stuck, life moves on, and it will only take bodies in motion with it. The name of this collection translates to "a trip around the sun" and it symbolizes the cyclical nature of human beings and our societies. It illustrates the beauty found in the certainty that everything shall start once more maybe with hints of the past but still ever evolving. The main inspiration for this collection is the designer's upbringing and childhood in Panama, using nature and ultra-femininity to express the epitome of the powerful Latina woman transforming into a form of divinity. These looks are part of a larger collection being showcased during this year's Fashion Art Toronto season in early May.

Translation

My mom used to tell me that women are like Amazonian warriors: powerfully brave, afraid of nothing and no one but with immense respect and love for the nature and women that surround us. This collection represents a woman that more than being a warrior due to her circumstances of being born in an extremely chauvinistic society, this is how she would be if she was free. Totally free. How she would be if she was able to express her femininity without fear of men’s prying eyes and words, that without any invitation invade your intentionally invisible space. The Ethereal Amazonian is the victorious warrior after the final battle wearing her finest dresses, ready to just be her in peace. She is the personification of freedom made into a woman. A bright oasis inside of the emptiness and darkness. Part of the jungle, sky and sea. Owner of everything and dreamer of nothingness. The right hand of everyone and everything that dare cross her animal kingdom. She’s the face of the ancestors robbed of any sparkle or earthly exuberance. She smiles and covers with her blanket anyone that will know how to listen. For that little girl that sees all the extraordinary in life, this is the woman you dreamt of being one day and she’s waiting for you with her arms wide open.

Bienvenido a mi mundo imaginario.

About this collection of snow pants (translated from spanish)

As kids we create these imaginary worlds, inhabited by imaginary beings that make this imaginary world go round. Life is good, easy, serene, we feel surrounded by the love and beauty of our surroundings. As we grow and live we slowly start to loose that sense of amazement, of finding joy in the simplest of things that spin us around everyday. When we’re little we have these extraordinary imaginary friends, some even with super powers and everything. Now when it’s hard to differentiate between one day and the last, one face from the next, the most trivial things have become the most amazing to me at the same time. I have found immense peace knowing that everything in my house ticks the way it’s supposed to: the electricity runs in the currents, water through the pipes, air coming out of the heaters, and love and life running through my veins and those who surround me. This winter collection translates these deep feeling of gratitude and serenity while being something to take lightly, not too seriously like the little doodles you swore where the prettiest things as a child. The main pieces are all made from upcycled vintage sleeping bags with the intention of remembering that thrill of going to a whole new world when going to a sleepover. My new imaginary friends are the most real things I’ve had all along: water, air, fire, life and love. I hope that you’re able to feel them like me too. Welcome to my imaginary world.

The concept behind “Creature Study” was born out of me feeling like a full-on creature emerging from my house amidst the pandemic. Feeling awkward and out of place doing normal everyday tasks outside in public (grocery shopping, walking down the street, etc). I then began to dig deeper into my psyche about what these feelings meant to me as a female emerging into society again. I forgot what it was like to feel cat called, I forgot what it was like to feel whistled at or shouted at by men out in public since I had been indoors and surrounded only by my close friends for almost a year. I emerged from quarantine feeling less like a free human and more like a creature. A creature being studied, speculated and sexualized as a female all while trying to function as a normal human assimilating back into society. I wanted to do a crossover of what it felt like to be a human emerging back out into society after a pandemic while also being a woman.
